By the third time that week Livia watched herself press “snooze” on the alarm that was supposed to save her career, she felt an almost scientific interest in her own tendencies. She lay there, fully conscious of the meeting she’d now be late for, narrating her downfall in real time like a particularly unhelpful sports commentator. It was as if some small, committee in her mind kept voting, unanimously, against her long-term interests, then filing the minutes away in a cabinet labelled “We’ll Definitely Do Better Tomorrow.”
Later, staring at the untouched spreadsheet she’d sworn to finish “this time for real,” Livia felt a wave of irritation rise up — not at fate, or her boss, but at herself, that stubbornly uncooperative organism she’d been assigned to live inside. She could see every step of the pattern as clearly as a painting hung in a well-lit gallery, and yet some inner, impulse kept reaching for the very choices that would sabotage her. One hand pressed to her temple, she looked up toward the ceiling, as if the plaster might crack open and deliver an instruction manual.
“What in the literal world is wrong with me?” she asked, half prayer, half punchline.
